The Phoenix Suns is a professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1968, the team is a part of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and plays in the Western Conference’s Pacific Division. The team’s home arena is the Footprint Center, which was previously known as the Talking Stick Resort Arena.
Early Years
The Phoenix Suns started as an expansion team in 1968. The team was owned by a group of businessmen from Phoenix, including Richard Bloch, Karl Eller, and Don Pitt. The team’s first head coach was Johnny “Red” Kerr, who led the team to its first win against the Seattle SuperSonics.
In the early years, the team struggled to find success, but that changed in 1976 when the team acquired Paul Westphal. Westphal helped lead the Suns to their first NBA Finals appearance in 1976, where they faced the Boston Celtics. The Charles Barkley Era
The Suns continued to be a competitive team in the 1980s and early 1990s, but it was in 1992 when they made a major move that would change the franchise’s fortunes. They acquired Charles Barkley, who was coming off an MVP season with the Philadelphia 76ers. Barkley’s arrival gave the Suns a superstar player who could dominate games and lead the team to victory.
In the 1992-93 season, Barkley led the Suns to the NBA Finals, where they faced Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Although they lost in six games, Barkley’s performance in the series was memorable, and he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player that season.
The Steve Nash Era
After Barkley left the team, the Suns struggled for a few years, but in 2004 they acquired Steve Nash, who had previously played for the team from 1996-1998. With Nash leading the way, the Suns became one of the NBA’s most exciting teams, known for their up-tempo style of play and high-scoring offense.
In the 2004-05 season, Nash won his first NBA MVP award, and the Suns made it to the Western Conference Finals. They would return to the conference finals in 2006 and 2007, but were unable to make it to the NBA Finals.

Led by Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Chris Paul, the Suns made it to the NBA Finals in 2021, where they faced the Milwaukee Bucks.
